writing style

The core of Chekhov's writing style is observation. He works to find the drama in small moments - the duality in simplicity and complexity. He is also heavily influenced by his medical career, saying that it causes him to carefully observe people and take scientific facts into consideration.

His writing is versatile and fluid; he often switches quickly and choppily from quick, casual dialogue to lyrical, poetic moments.

He doesn't think of art in many different sections or categories, he prefers to only differentiate between art he likes and art he doesn't. While working on Three Sisters, he was famously shocked that others considered it a heavy drama, because he saw it as a comedy.
